A Scrap Bin Overhaul

This creature was once intended to be a tree attached to a rock. The Creator had been making them periodically, but found that they didn't offer him enough of a challenge. This particular tree was tall and skinny, had few branches and really just looked altogether uninspired and terrible. Naturally, the Creator chucked it into the abyss with disgust. And there it remained for eons, motionless in the pit among tangled metal disasters doomed to spend eternity in darkness.

Out of nowhere it was plucked from the cold pit and given a second chance. The Creator didn't know why he chose this particular mistake, or what he was going to do with it. All he knew was that something was coming. Something that had never been seen before. He untwisted the tree trunk and unraveled the branches; the tangled roots straightened. The easy part had been done.

The Creator built upon what was once a narrow tree trunk. He wrapped more and more wire around the slender core until something began to form. Something strange. Something with multiple legs and spindly arms. And tentacles. These were the things that came first - the easy parts. The hard part came last. The spikes.

To this day, the Creator does not know the reason behind the spikes. He just knew that they must be, even if it meant shredding his skin for hours at a time just to get them secured. And shred his skin he did. The Creator could only work for an hour or so at a time when constructing the many spikes on the legs and back of the creature; his arms, legs and hands were often left with dozens of red scratches.

In the end, it was worth the discomfort. The Creator was pleased with what he had done. He was even more pleased when he discovered that because of the slender copper core, the creaure was very flexable and could easily roll into a ball like an armadillo (but with spikes). It is very likely that this creature, That Spiky Bastard, will be the first - and last - of its kind.
